WCU The Professor that Socializing Plays a Vital Role Discussion

This was original prompt:

The phrase “nurses eat their young” has been around for decades. The consequences of bullying include nurses reporting poorer mental health, decreased collaboration with team members, ineffective communication, reduced work productivity, and poor job commitment.

  • Do you feel bullying or horizontal violence is an issue in the clinical environment? Why or why not?
  • Discuss how the nurse mentor can promote professional socialization in the workplace.

This was my initial post:

  • Do you feel bullying or horizontal violence is an issue in the clinical environment? Why or why not?

Horizontal violence in nursing is defined as the hostile and harmful behavior by nurses or a single nurse towards a fellow nurse or co-worker. The behavior could be informed of words, attitudes, or even behavior (Hamilton, 2020). This kind of practice has been rampant for a long time in the nursing field; however, the method is an issue in the clinical environment. This behavior leads to an unsafe working environment and poor outcomes for the patient seeking medical treatment. The presence of horizontal violence adversely affects the nurse’s moral, mental and physical health and even reduces the self-worth of the nurse. It also impacts nursing recruitment and retention in the nursing practice.

  • Discuss how the nurse mentor can promote professional socialization in the workplace.

Practical mentorship impacts professional socialization positively in several ways. First, effective mentorship through role-playing, journaling, debriefing, and coaching promotes professional practice in healthcare. It serves to improve confidence in nurses in the course of practicing their nursing profession. Professional socialization fosters an environment of collaboration and open communication among workers (Kramer et al., 2018). Collaboration in the nursing practice contributes to the improvement in the outcome of the patient receiving medical attention. Socialization in the nursing practice further builds workers’ skills and confidence in the healthcare delivery to patients. It also promotes research and learning in the medical field to help deliver critical medical services that need advanced attention. Mentors can also understand the major causes of issues in the medical area towards finding the solutions to such problems.

In conclusion, Horizontal violence in nursing practice is defined as hostile and harmful behavior by nurses or a single nurse towards a fellow nurse or co-worker. The presence of horizontal violence adversely affects the nurse’s moral, mental and physical health and even reduces the self-worth of the nurse. Mentors, therefore, play an essential role in the nursing practice.

I need responses to the following 2:

1. Professor G (this counts as response)

Socializing helps build teamwork. An example could be working in groups. Can you give a positive and a negative experience working in a group? This can be work or personal.

While nursing is a profession dedicated to help others, incivility, bullying, and violence in the workplace are serious issues in nursing. Workplace bullying is repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more persons by one or more perpetrators. Yes, I do feel this is an issue in the clinical environment due to hearing others talk about it. I have been to clinical rotations where nurses do not want to have a student with them because it takes up their time or makes their job harder by having to constantly explain. The American Nurses Association proposed that every nurse has the right to work in a safe environment, which is a requirement for providing high quality patient care (Taylor, 2019). Horizontal violence can destroy the safety culture and wellbeing of nurses in work units.

  • Discuss how the nurse mentor can promote professional socialization in the workplace.

Different ways to promote professional socialization in the workplace are by showing them in the very beginning of the hiring process. If it is implemented at the very beginning it is more likely to continue onto their career. Interaction with others helps identify and prioritize their beliefs and values. Exposure to a variety of patient settings as well as challenging and engaging classroom activities allow new nurses and students chances to model behaviors, language, and attitudes. The nurse mentors’ job is to determine the appropriate settings, activities, and resources that will help facilitate professional socialization. Some different methods to help students with their transitions is role modeling behaviors and challenging their perspectives.
