Descartes needs to trust his rational abilities to make a reasonable conclusion for the existence of God. However, in order to trust his rational abilities, he needs the existence of a God to make sure reason is directed toward truth. The problem that Hume identifies is circular reasoning. Descartes can only trust his rational capacity if he knows God exists, but he’ll need to trust his rational capacity to get there.

Is Hume right? Is his criticism of Descartes valid?
