Wayne Community College Respond to Andrea Gibbs TED Talk Discussion

Watch the following TED talk, write about what do you think? How did she hold the audiences attention? What made this a compelling story?

Write a few sentences with your response. Point out specific elements of Gibbs’ talk as you respond.

https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/academi… These might be the elements you would want to talk about

Now that you’ve learned a bit more about wheat makes a story successful, I want you to go back to Gibbs’ TED Talk and reassess your analysis.

Below are some things you might discuss in a few sentences. When you’re done, respond to at least one (1) other student’s post.

  1. Identify the parts of her speech that correspond with the points on Freytag’s pyramid.
    • How does she introduce us to that world? What details does she tell us?
    • What is the inciting incident? In other words, what takes Gibbs out of her everyday life and injects some drama, tension and conflict into her life?
    • Name one point in the story where you feel the tension rising (but where we’re not quite at the climax).
    • What is the point in the story where you feel the most tension (the climactic moment)?
    • What is the fallout (falling action)? In other words, what happens after the climactic moment?
    • Was there a lesson learned that she expresses at the end of the video? What is it?
  2. Think about the overall delivery of the story. Look back at the Tools to Understand/Create Narrative Essays page. What techniques did Gibbs use that were successful in delivering a compelling and memorable story?
