The chapter states that media represents groups in stereotypical ways through popular culture, which spreads throughout society (both domestically and internationally) and results in the creation of non-accurate and prejudicial beliefs about such groups in the minds of media viewers.
For this assignment, you will be required to watch the following video and provide your opinion. In summary, the video provides examples of the media’s (movies and television shows) stereotypical portrayal of various groups (i.e., ethnic, gender, national, sexual-orientation) throughout time. This assignment will require you to do the following:
1) Watch the Video,
2) Post a response to the following questions (your response needs to be about a paragraph long, which would include about 8 complete sentences) (5 points):
- Do you think the media portrays groups in stereotypical ways? (Provide examples).
- Do you think media’s portrayal of groups has an impact on the beliefs, stereotypes, and behaviors of viewers who watch? (How so?).
- What can be done (by viewers, producers, actors, alternative media outlets, social media, etc.) to show more accurate depictions of groups in the media?
3) Post a response to another classmate’s response. Your response can agree or disagree with the classmate, but it must be respectful. Your response to a classmate also needs to be about a paragraph long, which would include about 8 complete sentences (5 points).
