Walden University Virtual and On Site Coaching Discussion

Leadership coaches may work with clients virtually, using of various communication technologies, or on site within organizations. While virtual coaching and on-site coaching are both widely used and accepted, there are distinctive strengths and limitations of each. Deciding whether to engage in virtual coaching or on-site coaching requires an evaluation of such strengths and limitations. You must also consider your personal preferences as a coach as well as your clients’ personal preferences. Think for a moment about which setting you might prefer as both a leadership coach and client? Would you be more comfortable conversing over the phone or via e-mail? Or would you be more comfortable conversing when you can see to whom you are talking? Which setting might be more conducive to the processes, methods, and activities related to coaching?

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the course media, “Roles and Settings” with Diane Brennan.
  • Review Chapter 10 from Therapist Into Coach and Chapter 1 from Coaching Skills: The Definitive Guide to Being a Coach.
  • Reflect on the strengths and limitations of virtual coaching and on-site coaching.
  • Consider situations for which virtual coaching might be most appropriate and think about why.
  • Think about situations for which on-site coaching might be most appropriate and consider why.
