Leadership is a combination of honesty, dedication, critical thinking, assigning work, monitoring, communicating, coaching, obtaining resources, building relationships, and problem-solving (Austin et al., 2013). In the twenty years, this writer has been employed for a for-profit organization and has seen many great leaders come and leave. On the other hand, some people were put into Leadership roles that did not fit the mold. Not sure if this writer wants to jump into a leadership position until I work for a while as a social worker at a mental health facility or hospital clinical social worker. After completing the Leadership Assessments for our final project, this writer believes that she would be a good leader one day.

Finding out from week ten what type of leader I am was interesting. According to Northouse (2021) assessment, this writer has a democratic leadership style. This type of leadership results in increased member satisfaction, commitment, and cohesiveness (Northouse, 2021). Everyone appears to work together to get the work down. The score was all fours and fives; this writer scored self two points lower than the five people who rated this writer.

Definition of Leadership and Perspectives

Throughout this course and during my field placement this term, I feel my definition of leadership and my personal perspective has expanded. With experience and knowledge comes a stronger desire to improve areas where effective leadership may lack. I have been more receptive to constructive criticism and understanding what it means to be an effective leader in the social work field, and better understand that each individual has a unique learning style. I have struggled with confidence for a great deal of my adult life, but now understand the importance of exuding confidence and assurance in leadership. With experience and studies, I feel more confident in myself and my ability to lead others in a positive manner.

Applying My Discoveries

After taking this course, I can now identify leadership styles such as democratic, authoritarian, and Laissez-Faire (Northouse, 2021, p 138-142). This is important as I continue my career as a social worker to apply my leadership techniques and become the professional I envision in my field. I will take this information with me and utilize my strengths and improve my weaknesses to better myself both personally and professionally.
