Walden University Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methodologies Responses

I’m working on a business discussion question and need an explanation to help me learn.

Please respond to the following two post. Each post should contain at least one reference in the response . Response should be at least two paragraphs .

Discussion #1:
For every individual, there is a different mindset that results in their own personal research philosophy. This development refers to the systems of beliefs and assumptions, where it shapes all aspects of research projects that are to be constructed (Saunders et al, 2015). To create one’s own research philosophy, there would be the need to consistently reflect on one’s own beliefs and assumptions, taking others into perspective as well. This results in the individual generating their own philosophy, where they have their own unique and valuable way of seeing the world of business (Saunders et al., 2015). Although each philosophy is different, there is not one research viewpoint that is the best and most used.
Looking into the five major philosophies that are prominent within the readings, my personal research philosophy is positivism since I come from a more scientific background. Utilizing the scientific method throughout my schooling, I have become accustomed to identifying and accessing the causes that influence outcomes through experiments and surveys (Creswell & Creswell, 2017). Through observations and measurements, I was able to develop hypotheses that can be tested to ensure that there is viable research to continue to develop or if it is a flawed concept. Analyzing the research through a scientific lens gives me the ability to look at the data collected in a neutral and independent standpoint, allowing myself to not influence my findings (Saunders et al., 2015).
Although this philosophy is predicated on a quantitative method, for my Doctoral Study, I would use a mixed-methods approach. This methodology combines the use of both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques and analytical procedures (Saunders et al., 2015). Having the ability to distinguish data by utilizing different types of methods, allows my results to be interpreted in a more comprehensive way that would ensure further development than using the scientific method. By employing this type of methodology, there will be neutralization of the weaknesses within the research associated with a single method used (Creswell & Creswell, 2015). With this choice of methodology, it will have a significant impact on a Doctoral Study, for it gives the researcher the ability to better analyze the data collected.
Each method selected encourages an individual to deal with research issues in a particular way and to advance certain kinds of arguments for the credibility of their own conclusions (Firestone, 1987). Having a mixed-method approach to the research ensures that all data is collected in an orderly fashion through different channels of research, such as discussions, interviews, questionnaires, and surveys. Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative approaches on the same research project enables the use of different methods to assess the stability of the findings (Firestone, 1987). The data acquired would then have the opportunity to be further developed to gain the most knowledge out of the research project.

Discussion #2:
According to Saunders et al. (2015), research philosophy refers to a system of assumptions and beliefs about developing knowledge. One of the roles of the researcher(s) is to utilize assumptions and concepts that are advantageous for the study. Assumptions are made at every turn in research, whether consciously or subconsciously, and there are several types. The first assumption is epistemological and involves human knowledge. The second type of assumption is ontological and consists in seeking the explanation of entities. Thirdly, an assumption made about the extent personal values influence a research process is axiological (Saunders et al., 2015).
I am interested in researching ways small businesses can maintain sustainability beyond the first five years of operations and will use the functionalist paradigm. This paradigm is concerned with rational explanations being used to develop sets of recommendations within the current structures that are already in place (Saunders et al. 2015). The topic of small businesses maintaining sustainability inevitably involves research about leadership. I believe the philosophy that best fits my personal beliefs is that of interpretivism and that subjectivism is best aligned with my research philosophy because it adopts opinions and narratives rather than facts and numbers. Thanks to the adoption of interpretivism, qualitative research areas such as issues of ethics, leadership and analysis of factors impacting leadership etc. can be studied in a great level of depth (Greeff 2015). The research methodology that I will utilize is qualitative research, which coincides well with interpretivism according to Saunders et al. (2015). I will also be taking the approach of a phenomenologist because they are generally focused on the lived experience of participants (Saunders et al., 2015).
The choice of methodology has a significant impact on a Doctoral Study. Choosing the correct research method plays a vital role in determining the success and overall quality of the study. When determining the appropriate method to use, it is important to remember that learning to appreciate both quantitative and qualitative research designs is the best way to decide which one is applicable in each situation (Onwuegbuzie & Leech, 2005). Having a strong understanding of both research methods will help to make future research determinations easier.
