Indicate what task role you played in each group. Categorize your list into the four types of groups discussed in this lesson. Answer the questions below in your discussion post.
- Which category has the most items?
- What needs are you satisfying through these groups?
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the patterns of interaction you have witnessed in groups to which you belong. Be specific, using a variety of supporting materials (definitions, examples, statistics, stories and analogies) to compose your response.
Here is the four types of groups discussed in this lesson:
- Social groups – satisfy the needs of group members for entertainment, along with affection, inclusion, and control. Fraternities and sororities are examples of social groups.
- Learning groups – strive to increase the knowledge and skill of each group member.
- Problem-solving groups – resolve problems by using structured and unstructured interaction to define a problem, clarify its causes, and offer solutions. You may find yourself involved in more problem-solving groups than any other type of group. This type of group strives to achieve a variety of specialized goals which include persuasion, evaluation, and promotion.
- Self-help groups – focus on teaching the group members about themselves
