This is my non-profit organization:
World Bank PNGO
Week One Scenario: You have just been hired by a non-profit organization as a computer consultant. Your first task is to observe and analyze how the company uses computers. Note that some people are employees and some people might be interns or volunteers. There may be different (and new) people using some of the computers.
Each student will choose a DIFFERENT non-profit organization. Choose from this list below or from other resources, but it must be a non-profit organization. Use the link below to choose a type of industry.

By Wednesday, create a placeholder discussion board message and put the name of the non-profit in the subject line. You will go back later and complete the discussion assignment. This way, you will not replicate each other’s non-profit companies. DO NOT use a company used by another student.
NOTE: Each non-profit company has different computer needs, so be sure to do some research about that company to see what type of work they do and how they might be using computers for that work. If you use that researched information in your post, cite it.
Part 1:
- Determine when you think staff might use multitasking. Give an example of a project for which they might need to run more than one program at a time. What project would involve multitasking within the same programs? You have noticed that staff tends to start up a program and then start it up a second time without closing the first. Is that a good practice? Why or why not?
Part 2:
- Think about the Windows 10 desktop analogy. List different Windows 10 programs, and the traditional tools to which they might correspond (for example, Word Pad is like a typewriter; the Calculator is like a hand-held calculator, the mouse is like your hand picking up a tool or turning a page). Relate this analogy to the concept of multitasking. Why might your non-profit organization want to customize their desktops? Would you recommend a consistent desktop customization or should staff be able to customize according to their specific needs?
First student post:
TED Talks is a non profit organization used to spread short but powerful and motivational ideas through speech. TED talks began in 1984 starting as a conference about technology, and today it talks about almost anything and can be understood in over 100 different languages. During a TED talk multitasking is almost always being used to make sure, the lighting, sound and power points are all working at the same pace. Doing this allows for the speaker to grab all the attention and make the talk more powerful allowing the audience to understand the intent of the speech. Listening to Gavin McCormick’s “Tracking the whole worlds emissions – with satellites and AI”, he starts off with talking about his main points and builds up to his main reasons to grab the audiences attention then starts showing slides and studies of his research to become more credible. This requires multitasking on different computers and systems in order to pull this off perfectly. Opening a window then coming back to open the same window, depending on your computer, can make your current browser slower. I do not recommend this as its pointless to have two of the same things open at once. But if you have a browser for music then another for work or school, if it does not interfere with that then it is alright.
Customizing a desktop for a nonprofit organization is always a good thing. At first the customization may be costly but in the end I believe you will save money. The staff or person using it being able to change anything they feel would help benefit themselves would always be a better option. Windows 10 does have a personalize option so you can change your desktop, to how you see fit ,by just right clicking anywhere and going down to the “personalize” option. It comes with great settings to help anyone out with what they need to do. I do believe customizing is best but since it is a nonprofit organization there should be a min-max of what they are allowed to do and money they can use to get it done.

The second student post:
Mozilla is also a non-profit organization run by volunteers and is free to use. The company works to ensure the internet remains a public resource that is open and accessible to us all. “For more than two decades, we’ve worked across borders, disciplines, and technologies to fuel a movement to realize the full potential of the internet.” This statement from the Mozilla website is an accurate reflection of the mission and values of the Mozilla community. They are a diverse group of people who believe in improving the internet for everyone through openness, innovation, and by building a more inclusive, accessible, and respectful internet.
Mozilla has an extension in the web browser Firefox called Side View that allows one to view two different browser tabs simultaneously in the same tab within the same browser window. When one starts up a program and starts another without closing the other one, it would mean that they do their work easier. In other words, multitasking saves time as it is an efficient way of getting the task done in a shorter period. Although multitasking may result in slow performance of the program, it may depend on how much the program is running or when the computer cannot handle all of the running programs on the computer. In any case, the ability to multitask is an advantage when it comes to computers. People use multitasking a lot when they do their email, watch videos, read an article, and write a document about it. Within the company, I can see that our staff would use multitasking for writing reports on user activity interaction and statistics on one program, with a writing document program.
To the company staff, there is an app that came with Windows 10 called sticky notes that can assist in writing down your thoughts and ideas on the screen. It is also a great way to keep track of your ideas and notes as they come up while working. Moreover, there is also a screen capture program that allows one to take a screenshot of your desktop and save it on your computer. It is a tool for those who want to make the best of their time while working by having a computer screen capture of their desktop to reference later for more work. For customizing the desktop, I would recommend to the staff what apps/ programs they should have on their desktop, such as Microsoft word or excel, but they may pick as long as it fits their needs, as long as it is deemed professional within the workplace.
