Assignment: Visual Analysis

For this assignment, thumb through your textbook and find an image that appeals to you. Any chapter, any image (except for Van Gogh’s Starry Night, since that is used as the example.). Note that each image will have a caption stating where the work of art is located. Use this information to research the work and/the artist. Please keep in mind that research is only as good as the source, so be ruthless in your search for reputable information. Two sources are recommended. Please note: Wikipedia should only be used as a secondary source.
1.) Click “Reply” below, and create a post, beginning with the title of your selected work.
2.) Copy and paste the image (small to medium size; no large images) of the work within the post.
3.) Include the artist, title, medium (oil on canvas, charcoal on paper, bronze, etc.), date and image source.
4.) In the first paragraph, describe the formal elements the artist uses in the work (i.e. line, shape, color, space, value, texture, pattern, time, etc.). Students are expected to apply a minimum of six vocabulary terms.
5.) In the second paragraph, discuss the principles of design. How is the image balanced? How are harmony and variety achieved? Which of the principles stands out to you the most? Please utilize a minimum of two principles of design.
6.) In an additional paragraph, research the artist or artwork briefly. You do not need to go into great detail – just a few sentences of highlights. However, you must correctly cite your work, and your work cannot be copied and pasted from any website. It must be in your own words (although you may include a quote).
7.) Lastly, students must respond to at least one classmate’s post in a meaningful way.
*Do not discuss the subject or content of the image.
* Use complete sentences and your own words.
*Assignments should meet a minimum word limit of 350 words.
