Virtue/Discipline Journal Reflection—

Each student will choose a virtue/discipline to put into practice during the second half of the semester.

**********From the list I have chosen this topic

Walking – Contemplative, ecological walking is a practice we see developed by people like Henry David Thoreau. This virtue would include taking regular walks outside of the urban areas surrounding the College without the distractions of other people or technology. The idea would be to contemplate the biosystems outside of the city and to cultivate feelings of appreciation and care for the more-than human world in which you live.

  • Ecological Virtues: Relationality, Solidarity.

You might supplement you walks with a reflection journal, or perhaps by reading Thoreau’s essay on Walking.

******I need you to answer the following question regarding my choice of the topic “Walking

Virtue/Discipline Journal Reflection – Answers to questions one through three.

    • Describe the virtue and your motivation.
      • What is the virtue you chose to practice and why did you choose it? What was the intended impact of this virtue on your own character and on the well-being of Earth’s ecosystems and creatures? Include here a connection to one or more of Nash’s schema of ecological virtue.
    • Describe what you did.
      • How did you implement this practice into your life? How did you end up developing the habit – did you ease your way into it or dive right? Did your practice develop or evolve along the way? In other words, what did you actually do and how did you actually develop this habit?
    • Describe your experience throughout the second half of the semester.
      • What did you learn in this experience? How successful were you in developing new habits and breaking old ones? How meaningful was the experience and what were the highlights? Do you anticipate the habit sticking beyond this course? Do you anticipating developing in significant ways or branching off into other habits? Do you think you care more for creation and creatures as a result of this assignment or no?
