Book Report

You will choose a mathematician whose life and work interest you and whom you wish to investigate in more in detail. During the semester, you will read a biography of this mathematician and write a book report on your findings. Your paper should be MLA format 6-8 pages double spaced and should address the following issues:

Include basic biographic content of the mathematician — who they were, where they lived, family background, etc.

Include the major mathematical contributions of the mathematician.

Address the issue of the cultural background. What motivated this mathematician to study what he or she studied? Was it application to the sciences? Was it math for its own sake? If it was math for its own sake, did the discoveries find application later on? Finally, did the mathematician’s cultural, philosophical, or religious values play any role in determining what kind of mathematics he or she pursued?
