micro fiction of 300 words. An example of micro fiction is the story by Samoan–Palagi

author Serie Barford entitled ‘Endgame’ which is included in the Chapter 3

‘Understanding Creative Writing’. For this assignment you will engage with one of the

three different news stories about Aotearoa New Zealand’s bicultural society that are

provided below. Choose ONE of the news stories and craft a 300-word micro fiction story

that responds to it. You should explore your chosen news story and conduct some

research to ensure you understand the issues represented and their significance in

relation to Aotearoa’s bicultural context. Use the writing techniques outlined in the

Creative Writing module and the study guide chapters, including narrative, imagery,

character and tension, to develop original writing that communicates creatively about the

issues raised in the news item. Your story should aim to provoke an affect-response in

your reader. Make sure you refer to the introductory module for detail about what makes

a piece of communication creative, including an explanation of affect, and information on

bicultural creative communication.
