As nurses in my opinion, self image, including grooming, dress and speech is very important. Our primary goal is to take care of the sick individuals in our care. Myself being a newer Registered nurse but not new to nursing feels that image is everything. My first job in the hospital was a nursing assistant in the late 1970’s. I was trained by a older military nurse which instilled in me the importance of dress and grooming as a healthcare worker. Our patients expect us to look the part of our profession. For nurses good communication skills are a very important rather its verbal or nonverbal. Communication is needed to make accurate diagnosis and make sure the patients understand the healthcare they are receiving. Nursing is not only learning the basics of profession but maintenance of confident posture, dress code and the way they conduct themselves, even under stressful situations. According to one study the senior matrons reported that they preferred a ‘good, kind and reliable’ nurse over a ‘clever’ nurse. There are wide reaching implications for positive nurses’ attitude and improved ethics education that may motivate ethical conduct throughout s nurses’ careers. This grooming of ethical mind-set can be motivated by focused programs during their educational cycle(Lorentzon, M., 2001).
The power strategy I would need to develop most is the ability to take constructive criticism gracefully; learn to let destructive criticism “roll off your back” which is sometimes hard to do. At times it can feel as though you are being picked on or singled out for a honest mistake that was made, but in essence it is the safety of our patient that is most important. Also, constructive criticism can make you a stronger nurse in the long run and remember not to take the advice personally.

1. Choose the one strategy that you feel is the most important for a nurse leader to possess, and why it is important.
One strategy that is most important for a nurse leader to possess is self-confidence. Self-confidence unlocks the key to every other aspect of leadership. It is an attribute that comes from within as well as one that can develop over time. I believe that being self-confident can influence one’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relationships, and job performance. A recent article discussed how self-confidence plays pivotal role of a leader’s capability in affecting their team members emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. The self-confident leader can also gain the credibility and trust of his or her team members. It is important that a leader’s team members perceive him or her in that manner (Axelrod, 2017).
2. Choose the one strategy which you feel you need to most develop in yourself, and how you plan to develop this during the Practicum course.
The one leadership strategy I would like to develop during the practicum course would be in learning to be comfortable with conflict and ambiguity. In taking on a leadership role, encountering conflict and ambiguity will be inevitable. The nurse leader will be faced with opposition from team members due to a difference of opinions or ideas as well as having to deal with being unsure on how to proceed due to vague information. I believe that in practicing conflict resolution with one’s team members, this will help improve relationships as well as serve as a valuable learning tool.
