Week 4 Discussion 1 : Watson VS Nightingale

Mariz posted

Watson’s Theory of Caring is a wonderful contribution to the nursing world; it’s organized manner has clear descriptions needed to make a positive and successful nurse. If nurses saw the list and thought, “I don’t think I’m any of those qualities” then maybe this type of career is not cut out for you. But those who see the caritas list and think, “ yes, I’m happy to do any of these things to help the patient feel better”. One of Watson’s Caritas is to “create a healing environment at all levels, whereby wholeness, beauty, comfort, dignity, and peace are potentiated” (Clasen, 2017, para. 7). I believe that a little bit goes a long way to create a healing environment for patients. Tucking patients in with a warmed blanket and dimming the lights make a difference for patients’ comfort. One comparable theory is Florence Nightingale’s environmental theory. “Modern nursing has (re) invented itself; however, it has retained numerous principles of Florence’s environmental theory in its scientific bases. It also incorporated new technologies, to guarantee the execution of human and singular care to human beings, always guided by the science and art inherited from Florence Nightingale, prioritizing the comfort, the technique and the environment suitable for healing patients” (Riegel et al., 2021,p. 3, Para. 7). It is 2021 and I currently live in Southern California; the environmental stresses for my patients may be “ 1st world problems”. But stressors nonetheless. I can offer these patients blankets, fresh food and water, shelter, and safety, etc. In Nightingale’s time, which was 200 years ago, concerns to provide these comforts may not have been possible. Both are considered holistic approaches and do not require medicinal intervention. “Nightingale focused instead on data documenting sanitation drainage, water quality, housing construction, food quality, alcohol use, and physical activity” (Ofri, 2021,para. 4). In this pandemic, the environment out of the hospital has been a roller coaster of events and emotions. One week we felt safe that the covid numbers were down and then the next week suddenly another surge happened again. The politics of it all makes it chaotic but manageable. In the end, we are here to take care of patients and make everyone feel as safe as possible in this 2000 square feet space of a hospital room.
