A “one-pager” is a kind of “lightning-round” informal essay where you write as much as you can on a single page, without space breaks or new paragraphs (normally we love new paragraphs in an essay) in an effort to force yourself to hunt for specifics from among your more general notions about a piece of literature. This doesn’t mean it must be sloppy or grammatically incorrect, but it won’t be graded to the same standard as your Close Reading Essay or the larger writing assignment to come. Fill the page, only one page, single-spaced, as you deal with the following question:
Option 1: Discuss what “being a man” means to Dave Saunders. Why does the gun represent manhood to him?
Option 2: Does a black boy in the 1930s South automatically get “to be a man like anybody else” or does he have to make that happen?
Option 3: Why does Dave Saunders want the power to “kill anybody, black or white”?
Here’s what a one-pager should look like. You want to reach at 650 words, if you can. (Attached file)
