Urban Planning Community Transformation Essay

Attachments are reading notes and requirement. And here’s also some additional requirement:

1) Main Idea/Thesis

It is essential to understand and execute an effective thesis statement, something that acts as a
map or guide as to what the essay is about. In most cases, the thesis statement should make an
assertion or state a specific claim that will serve as the main idea of the essay. This will help to
provide purpose and direction to the essay.

2) Structure, Relevance and Organization

The structure and organization of an essay should present and arrange information in a logical
manner. A well-crafted thesis statement will create the means for which all information should
flow. The body of the essay should provide the evidence and details that support the thesis.
Each paragraph should serve purpose and direction for the thesis. Every paragraph should
begin with a declarative lead sentence that serves two functions: 1) Connects directly to the
thesis and 2) define the rationale or purpose for the paragraph that will follow. This is how
relevance is determined. Each paragraph should serve the thesis. If it fails to do so, it most likely
doesn’t belong. See the example below:

Thesis Statement: The community of Madison, NJ is the product of a deep spiritual connection
that allows residents to obtain a sense of belonging and inclusiveness.

Supporting paragraph lead sentence: Spirituality is significant to place throughout the
community.

Every sentence that follows in the paragraph should support and define, provide examples of,
spirituality in Madison. Nothing in the paragraph should stray from the topic declared by the
lead sentence. In this way, every lead sentence acts as a “mini” thesis statement.

3) Content and Evidence

Any essay is only as strong as the evidence it provides and the way in which it is presented.
Reference to outside material helps to substantiate any claims that are made by the author of
the essay. Evidence can be presented in a number of ways, but should not be limited to just
quotes and citations. When used effectively, sources not only provide evidence that support
the thesis, but also add credibility to the assertion being made. It is important to demonstrate
that any essay reflect an understanding of the topic and what contributions have been made
previously in shaping the author’s perspective.

Thank you so much!
