UP Literacy Instructional Strategy Interdisciplinary Lesson Plan Discussion

I HAVE ATTACHED AN EXAMPLE OF ALL OF THE ASSIGNMENTS. PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND LOOK AT THE EXAMPLES FOR A GUIDE TO COMPLETING EACH ASSIGNMENT.

Literacy Instructional Strategies Assignment

1. Identify two books that your students will read. Make sure the books are grade level appropriate and align with your content area. See the rubric for specific requirements. You must provide your grade level and content area of licensure in the assignment.

2. Combine the course readings with independent research on literacy assessment strategies in order to create plans to assess students’ literacy focusing on each dimension of literacy – oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

3. Make sure that your plans connect to the books that your students will read by including specific vocabulary from the book in word based assessments and include specific comprehension strategies when assessing comprehension. Make sure to plan for assessing phonological awareness, phonics, and fluency even if you plan to teach at the secondary level.

4. Cite the credible sources you found through your research on literacy assessment to create your plans.

Please read the “Announcements” section of the course for more tips on completing this assignment.

NOTE: It is important that teachers for all grade levels and content areas have an understanding of how students develop literacy skills over time from preschool through grade 12. Students at all grade levels come into our classrooms at varying levels of literacy development. Some secondary students (English learners, special education students, struggling learners) still need guided and independent practice using appropriate activities that promote development of and assess oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, and fluency.

Class Technology Tool Assignment

  • Choose a technology that you can integrate into a lesson plan for your content area. Do not write “social media” or “internet.” Specify the platform, e.g., Twitter, Edmodo, etc.
  • Provide the grade level and content area for which you are planning.
  • Reference at least one higher order learning objective. Each objective must be labeled with the level of Bloom’s taxonomy at which it is written, with the verb underlined.
  • How will using this technology enhance the student learning of your chosen objective?
  • What are the risks or drawbacks to using this technology? How will you minimize these issues?

Interdisciplinary Lesson Plan Assignment

Plan an interdisciplinary lesson that relates to a current event. Include in your plan:

  • The grade and content area in which you are pursuing licensure
  • A link to a news story about the current event
  • Name of all content area disciplines that you are using in your plan and why you chose the other discipline as a corollary to your own. If you are a K-6 teacher, choose more than one discipline, e.g. math and science or math and art.
  • Learning objectives with the specific state standards to which you are aligning copied and pasted into the lesson. Standards addressed should reference your content area at least one other content area as defined in item 2. (You may refer to course 5200 or any other credible resources about learning theory.)
  • Warm-Up
  • Instructional Strategies: Explain how you will use high yield strategies to teach your objectives and guide the learning
  • List of materials needed for the lesson
  • Lesson closure / Formative Assessment. Note you must address BOTH components in order to earn full points on the rubric. Your closure activity may include a formative assessment component, but if you are combining the two, you must make this explicit in your plan.
  • Summative Assessment plan (include formative and summative assessments. Formative assessment may be informal, e.g. questioning strategies during the warm-up.)
  • Provide a homework plan or a plan to reinforce the learning in classroom

Pedagogical Content Knowledge Assignment

  • Provide the grade level and content area in which you are pursuing licensure.
  • Search the web to find a site that helps you build your PCK. This can be a scholarly article or a site you would use to create research based lesson plans with suggestions for the best teaching methods and strategies for teaching your content area.
  • Write a detailed reflection on how you can use the ideas from the site to improve your teaching and build your PCK.
  • Provide a list of academic vocabulary for your content area from the site or a second site.

Cumulative Course Project: Class Technology Initiative

For this assignment you must create a virtual classroom or blog on a platform that allows students to submit their responses to you via the platform. I do not need to see student responses. I only need to see the assignments you post.

Popular platforms for this assignment – Google Classroom, Schoology, Edmodo, Padlet, Flipgrid, Seesaw, ClassDojo, Canvas (these are just examples – I would accept any platforms similar to these)

**NOTE: If you use Nearpod, you must provide proof that you created the Nearpod lesson yourself and that you are not using a lesson created by another teacher.

You must include screenshots because I’m unable to reach many of these sites because of the privacy protections provided to school districts. I grade 75% of this assignment using screenshots. If you can not get your screenshots to post, go ahead and submit the assignment with a short explanation of each assignment. Then either attach your screenshots to the comments section or email them to me.

If you choose Edmodo, you do not need to provide screenshots, but you must provide the class code. This is not a link. It’s a code that Edmodo provides you to give you students so that they can join your Edmodo class

Use the discussed technology tools to create a class activity that teaches literacy and inter-disciplinarity. If you are already employed as a teacher, you may post this on an existing district site IF you are planning to use the materials in your class. Do not post anything on your district page that you will not actually use, as this will be confusing to your students and their parents. You must choose a tool that allows you to post original content, e.g. does not pre-populate assignments or content for you. Review the rubric for full assignment criteria.

Example: Start a class blog. Create a week of writing prompts on the blog that students should respond to as daily warm-ups. Prompts should address interdisciplinary content.
or
Create a class Edmodo page and include age-appropriate reading recommendations across multiple content areas. Write a reading comprehension quiz for at least one of your book recommendations. (If you choose Edmodo, you must include the class code in your submitted assignment.)

Provide the URL AND provide screenshots that include your name and the learning activities you have created for this assignment. You must provide the URL and screenshots (pictures) of your work. To embed images in your assignment:

  • Click the “Embed Image” icon.
  • Select the “Canvas” tab.
  • You will have the option to upload your screenshots.

3 Exemplary: The candidate has selected a technology tool that is accessible to all students and allows the teacher to post original content. The candidate has provided an active link to an established tool, e.g. an active blog with a welcome post or a dedicated class Edmodo page. The candidate has posted a welcome announcement and at least 2 assignments or writing prompts. In addition, the candidate has created and posted directions for a group project on the page or blog.
