UNLV Diversity and Inclusion Discussion

We are living in historical times. Let’s use this backdrop as a learning opportunity as we study diversity. Early in the semester, I shared that I had seen this topic of diversity evolve and then devolve over the past few years.

This is not a political commentary. It is merely observational and illustrative that certain aspects of “diversity’s” twin virtues of “inclusion” and “equity” have been seriously challenged.

Recently, the world has been confronted head-on  with a global health crisis. Please think very hard and deeply about the following. We know that there is no law that mandates diversity policies. We know that this pandemic was discovered in China and has touched every country in the world. We know that states and the federal government in the United States do not universally agree on solutions. We know that we can no longer gather in meaningful ways that would foster diversity and inclusion. Are there groups being targeted in negative ways? Think about all 4 levels of diversity–this is key to answering  below.

THIS IS YOUR ASSIGNMENT–10 POINTS

Do you think the pandemic will impact diversity and inclusion in positive or negative ways?

Why?

What about the 4 levels of diversity–at what level(s) will things change as a result of the pandemic? You MUST know the 4 levels of Diversity

With casinos and restaurants in Las Vegas re-opening under social distancing guidelines and with limited tourism, how do you think this has impacted diversity & inclusion in our hospitality industry?

  1. Do you think the events of 2020 and 2021 will have long-term and lasting effects on DE&I, or will we go back to our “old ways?”
