This chapter presents a broad introduction to project management. It provides an introduction and overview of projects and project management. Work can be divided into two (2) categories; operations and projects. This chapter defines a project and the four (4) basic elements that must be met to discern a project from operations. Project management is an art and a science which uses knowledge, skills tools and techniques to meet the requirements of a project. The chapter identifies the trade-offs that are necessary in order to successfully complete a project from initiating to closing. Project management has been utilized throughout time from ancient and medieval infrastructure projects to the modern management methodologies including Agile.
This chapter introduces the Project Management Institute (PMI) and its publication, the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK). PMI methodology is the primary methodology examined within this textbook. This section provides an overview of the five (5) process groups (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and closing). These five (5) process groups are broken down into ten (10) knowledge areas and forty-nine (49) project processes. The PMI Talent Triangle is presented providing the three (3) primary knowledge and skill areas required by a project manager.
