University of Phoenix Week 3 Educational Planning and Placement Checklist

When planning the educational placement for a student with a physical- or health-related disability, there are many factors to consider before the IEP team meets and begins writing the IEP. Among them are accessibility, medical, and technology integration needs that may impact the decisions to be made. The factors to consider will vary from one condition or category to another, so to better prepare for this, you will develop an educational planning and placement checklist for the three categories on which this course is focused.

Refer to the Categories of Disabilities for guidance and examples of conditions or disorders in each category.
Research what factors should be considered when looking at educational placement options, services that may be needed, and supports required in order to be successful in the placement.Create a 2- to 2½-page checklist that identifies and explains 3-5 factors for consideration in each of the following disability categories (for 9-15 total factors):

  • Orthopedic impairment
  • Other health impairment
  • Sensory impairment
  • Explain your rationale with a brief justification for each factor, and include why it is important for the planning and placement of a student.
Consider the following types of educational needs that students require for each category:
  • Classroom placement options
  • Curricular options or content modifications
  • Adaptations and accommodations
  • Medical considerations and health care needs
  • AT option(s)
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device option(s)
  • Include references used to gather your information. List your references in APA format.
