Problem Statement: 

The problem is African Americans are under-represented among administrators in school leadership, resulting in higher turnover rates (Castro et al. 2018). 

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this study was to examine the underrepresentation of African American male administrators in K-12 leadership and its impact on the retention of African American male educators. This study focused on what barriers prevent African Americans from entering the principalship pipeline and what programs or policies help increase the retention of African American male educators. The findings from this study will allow educators interested in this phenomenon to take a deeper look at the experiences of African American male teachers, their successes, and challenges. Understanding the barriers that prevent African American males from pursuing leadership roles in K-12 and what programs and policies help increase retention of African American male educators will provide valuable information about how to increase and retain African American male educators in K-12 leadership.

Research Question:

  1. What barriers have prevented African American males in K-12 from accessing the principalship pipeline? 
  2. What programs and policies have proven effective in increasing African American male leadership and retention in K-12 schools?
