How does any of this relate to you? What sparks your curiosity? What molecular-level insights might pertain to your life?
The “Chemistry unzipped” project is your chance to explore, and share your findings with your classmates. Your topic could be something serious and significant, or “just” something about which you’re curious. It doesn’t have to have major societal import, but it’s fine if it does. Above all, have some fun with this. Some random examples from prior years….
- Kombucha
- How pets relieve stress
- The chemistry of bread
Experiments are a key component of science, and your project should include one. Experiments generally involve a variable (something that changes, a point of comparison). For example, the bread bakers looked at how the type of flour used influenced the amount of rising of the dough. Your experiment does NOT have to be complicated, but it should be relevant to the main thrust of your project.
Note: there are different types of experiments—lab-oriented ones, and also those of a more observational bent (a la, the “unplastic experiment” that we’ll do as part of the “All things plastic” discussion).
