Fostering Meaningful Employment for people with INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

Aim:

Gap in the literature: what is best practice for gaining employment?

Literature review:

1)Current circumstances (recent studies – level of employment rates, how they compare internationally, stats around retaining employment, gender as a factor, hours (satisfied/unsatisfied), areas of employment

  • National Inquiry into Employment Discrimination Against Older Australians and Australians with Disability 2015
  • Inquiry report into Willing to Work: National Inquiry into Employment Discrimination Against Older Australians and Australians with Disability (2016)
  • Note: MAIN FOCUS SHOULD BE ON POINT 2(Barriers and Factors)

2)Barriers to employment (for people with intellectual disability ) – refer to participation criteria. Current approaches/pathways for seeking employment – often people with high level needs perceived as “too difficult” .
Factors that needs to be in place for people with intellectual disabilities .

3) Effects of underemployment (tie in with fundamental needs)

4) Justification for finding employment for people with high levels of Intellectual disability

  • Positive contribution

5) How would Social workers train ID clients individually for employment
