University of Michigan Portrait of A Himalayan Healer Paper

For this assignment, you will write a reading response paper of 650 to 750 words. Late submissions will not be accepted unless you have a written record of illness or other personal emergency. You will use only sources from the course to write this paper and must follow the outline below. Proper APA (Links to an external site.) or MLA (Links to an external site.) citation guidelines must be used. Failure to cite sources will result in a penalty. If the situation warrants it, plagiarism could also result in a mark of 0 for this paper, this course, and/or a report to the department chair for disciplinary action.

For this first paper, I would like you follow a prescriptive outline. It may seem quite constrained as compared with other assignments, but part of the point here is to get you to start thinking, arguing, and observing in a way that is common in the academic world and in anthropology. It can be hard and uncomfortable to constrain yourself in this way, but a lot of university writing requires specific formats and this is a good general one that can help you in other courses, as well.

Focusing on Portrait of a Himalayan Healer!!! , write a 650 to 750-word paper with the following sub-sections:

Summary: This should offer a very brief summary of the article. It can be quite hard to distill a long reading that has a lot of detail. Focus on the topic, argument, and key ideas only. Don’t get bogged down in the details.

Analysis: Using the summary you have just done and Guest’s description of fieldwork (p. 63 to 66 in Essentials of Cultural Anthropology), offer an analysis of what close observation of the daily routines of Gyatso and Tenzin enables Sienna Craig to learn about the relationship between Tibetan Medicine or amchi medicine and globalization.

Opinion: Once you have summarized and analyzed, you are ready to give your own opinion. Answer:

  • Do you think the fact that she plays a role in securing their funding raises any ethical or moral concerns in her research? Reference Guest p. 82-85.

Try to give equal weight (equal length) to each section of the response paper. See the rubric for grading guidelines.
