University of Massachusetts Boston In Depth Interviewing Study Application

Read the following blog post from The Society Pages covering a study on why liberals drink lattes:
https://thesocietypages.org/discoveries/2015/07/22…

Once you have read the blog post, develop your own study on why liberals drink lattes through in-depth interviewing. Follow these guidelines while developing your study:

  1. First, decide how many people you seek for your sample, and how you will find respondents for your sample.
  2. Next, decide whether you wish to use focus groups or individual in-depth interviews to uncover patterns with regard to taste among Americans. Why did you choose this method?
  3. Then create a semi-structured interview guide that can be used in either the focus groups or individual interviews to explore why individuals have specific aesthetic tastes and enjoy certain leisure activities. Decide what topics you will include in your guide (e.g., food, music, film, or sports). Explain why you selected the topic(s) and this particular order for your questions.
  4. Finally, reflect on your choice of method. How do you think your study can add to what is already known about individual taste? What are the advantages of using in-depth interviewing as the method?
