  1. You are going to compare and contrast how different cultures/societies handled the same iconography. (14 points)

Choose one of the following subjects (if you wish to do another topic it must be approved in advance):

  • Rulers
  • Deities
  • Women
  • Death
  • Animals

Choose an object representing that subject from three (3) cultures/time periods covered in this course. Some of these subjects’ objects may overlap. There should be a mixture of media (painting, sculpture, mosaic, and/or architecture) among your selections.

Introduce your subject and the objects you have chosen and why you have picked these works of art above others. Then:

  • Explain how the objects/images functioned in their society; be sure to indicate the context in which the image occurs, i.e. temple/church, palace, public building, tomb, book, etc.
  • Discuss how the depictions reflect the style (how the object looks–formal elements) of their place and time of origin
  • Discuss similarities and differences of how each culture addresses the subject.
