s your reaction to the content of the videos about food deserts? Are you surprised? Do you have any personal experiences that connect? I am very surprised with the content of the videos about food deserts. It is very shocking to hear that the United States, an international superpower, is faced with third-world problems. I never thought that American citizens could be faced with a food security problem this serious. To make it worse, statistics show that one in every ten Americans is directly affected by the food desert problem. I have no personal experience that connect with the food desert problem but I do sympathize with the locals of the areas affected with the same problem. The best solution to this problem would be developing organic farms that employ methods such as hydroponics and high-tech to produce high quantity and quality fresh food produce.  Apply one of the three major theoretical perspectives to the content of the video. How would a sociologist understand food deserts?  The solution to the food deserts in the form of giving 3 million dollars to big grocery stores in order for them to set up shop in these food deserts would be viewed as a negative solution by a conflict theorist. A conflict theorist would argue that giving money to big well-established grocery stores in order to solve the food desert problem would only be a way to increase the wealth of these rich grocery store owners while benefitting from the hard-earned tax money of low-income citizens. A proper solution from a conflict theorist point of view would be for the government to make direct supplies for fresh food to these food desert areas using the money made from citizens’ tax money.     Chapter 21   Name a current or historical social movement and describe. It’s ideological commitment to promote or resist social change. The Black Lives Movement. This movement campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people. The Black Lives movement has urged for the fair treatment of Black people around the world and in the US most specifically.  This movement aims to build up a new society where black people can live without fear for their lives, and with dignity and respect.  The cultural codes it challenges. The cultural code that the Black Lives Movement challenges is one where black people are intentionally targeted for negativity and demise. The movement was started in 2013 by three black women: Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors, following the unjust killing of Trayvon Martin, a teen African-American boy while walking to his friend’s house. The acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man who had shot him, then officiated the start of the campaign.  What, if any, social changes have you noticed since the last presidential election?  Since the election of Joe Biden to presidency, he has started a campaign that will loosen the restriction on the Muslim and African Travel Ban that Trump had set before.  Trump’s ban has for several months now impacted citizens of 13 countries mostly in Africa. This ban has spread Islamophobia and anti-blackness. Activists have fought to overturn the restrictions, stressing the effects of the ban on African and Muslim citizens. The Biden campaign has said it will end the counter-terrorism program, targeted against Muslims, to ensure that civil rights are protected. We are yet to see how Biden will address issues of foreign policy, but there’s no doubt that lifting these heavy restrictions set on mostly Muslim and African travelers will bring relief to thousands of separated families.
