University of Leeds Self Assessment on Class Participation Discussion

At the end of the course, each student has the option to submit a one-page write-up in which you give yourself an explicit score (from 0-100) that reflects your perception of your level of participation as well as justification for the percentage you have given yourself. The instructor will review your self-assessment and consider it when assigning your final class participation grade.

The following are guidelines concerning how you should think about class participation. This list is not exhaustive but will give you a sense of my criteria for evaluating your participation during the semester. At a minimum, participation in this setting would consist of the following:

Participation:

Consistently contributes to class discussions

Provides examples of personal experiences to illustrate course concepts

Asks questions when a topic or concept is not understood

Actively engages in in-class activities

Attends each class

For remote learners, keeps camera on.

Professionalism:

Is attentive, curious, enthusiastic, and willing to learn

Comes to class prepared

Takes pride in the quality of work produced for the course

Here are some examples, to give you an idea of how you might go about evaluating your level of participation:

An “A” would be given to someone who is an outstanding leader in class discussion who is always prepared (read COMPLETE chapter before every class), in class frequently initiates stimulating and thought-provoking questions, often brings outside articles and examples that illustrate course concepts, and serves as a role model for other students. Shows up on time and has perfect attendance (one miss is fine as long as you emailed me ahead of time). Student consistently has camera one.

A “B” is a consistent contributor to class discussion and who responds to instructor questions and comments. Rarely late and emailed professor ahead of time for any missed classes. Student uses camera when speaking.
