Week 10 Discussion and Posting

In APA Style, the explanation about using a language that is free of bias is essential. It is better to avoid perpetuating demeaning attitudes in any writing. Therefore, using constructions that implies prejudicial beliefs or perpetuate biased assumptions against persons on the basis of age, disability, gender, participation in research, racial, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and others is acceptable. It is essential to use terms that individuals or communities use to describe themselves, their experiences and their practices ((The Official Guide to APA Style, 2020).

To reduce bias during writing, one should start by describing at the appropriate level of specificity. This entails using words that are accurate, clear, and free from bias when referring to a person. Again, be mindful to describe only relevant characteristics rather than including all the information in a report. There is also important aspects when acknowledging relevant differences existing. Depending on the research questions, the writer should ensure he is appropriately specific after determining the characteristics to describe. Therefore, it is advisable for example to use the term patient, or party when describing an individual. Other acceptable words are subject and samples.

It was worth understanding about a style which is the guidelines to ensure clear, consistent communication and presentation in written works. There are specific styles required by publishers and instructors to the authors to avoid inconsistencies among and within journal articles and academic papers. Style manuals agree more often than they disagree; when they disagree, the Publication Manual takes precedence for APA Style papers or publications.

In style we have punctuation that establishes the cadence of a sentence, telling readers where they pause a comma, semicolon and a colon is used. We also have a stop and a detour where a dash, parentheses and a square bracket is used. Punctuations of a sentence denotes a pause in thought. It is essential to space after any punctuation except after internal periods in abbreviations, after periods in identity-concealing labels for study participants and around colons in ratios. Every punctuation mark has its function in writing and it is advisable to use then accordingly.

Making the correct spelling of which in APA we follow the Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary which should conform to the APA dictionary of Psychology. In case, the word is not in either of these dictionaries, one should consult an unabridged edition of Webster’s dictionary. There is also the style in capitalization. APA Style uses two types of capitalization for titles of works and headings within works: title case and sentence case. In title case, major words are capitalized. In sentence case, most words are lowercased. Nouns, verbs (including linking verbs), adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and all words of four letters or more are considered major words (The Official Guide to APA Style, 2020).

The preface establishes the issue yet concern leading according to the research by means of conveying data respecting a problem. Because such is the preliminary relation between a study and proposal, unique care ought to keep addicted in accordance with composition it. The introduction desires in imitation of begetting pupil activity of the topic, set the hassle up to expectation leads in conformity with the study, place the study within the larger association concerning the scholarly literature, yet attain out after a precise audience. All of that is done within a summarized share over a temperate page. Because of the messages that need to convey, then the confined space allowed, introductions are challenging in imitation of make-up and understand.

It might jump beside an experience researchers hold had of theirs personal lives or workplaces. It may additionally arrive beyond an extensive altercate that has been regarded in the literature. It would possibly increase from coverage debates into rule then among pinnacle executives. The sources about research issues are often multiple. Identifying then pointing out the research trouble to that amount underlies learning is no longer easy, according to identify the problem on juvenile being pregnant is to point in conformity with trouble because female or for the community at large. Unfortunately, too deep authors over-function now not absolutely identify the lookup problem, leaving the reader to figure out the worth of the issue. When the hassle is not clear, it is hard to conform with recognizing the importance of the research.

This theoretical orientation shapes the shape over an introduction, proposed in conformity with examine how many the concept regarding category-politics explained the scarcity over godsend of an anti-vice marketing campaign of some regarding iii America cities. Thus, within partial qualitative studies, the approach among the beginning may also stand less inductive while nevertheless relying on the perspective regarding participants, like near qualitative studies. In addition, qualitative introductions may also begin including a personal assertion over experiences from the author, such as these observed within phenomenological studies [1] Creswell, J. W., & Creswell, J. D. (2017, November 27).

A blended techniques discipline execute employ either the characters or the quantitative strategy partial mixture in imitation of literature an introduction. In any partial mixed-methods study, the stress would possibly tip between the route concerning either quantitative and characteristic research, and the introduction intention reflects up to expectation emphasis. For other mixed strategies projects, the emphasis desire remains even within characteristic and quantitative research. In it case, the hassle may also remain some into whom a need exists to each recognize the kin amongst variables between a scenario or explore the subject among similar depth. A blended strategies mission can also at the beginning pray according to explain the kindred of smoking

Chapter 5: Bias-Free Language Guidelines

The assigned readings of this week provided guidelines for avoiding bias language in writing. Writers using APA Style must recognize that, despite certain language variations, they must use the standards when interpreting data, writing, and discussing (Noble et al., 2021). These guidelines serve as a guide to what can be avoided. However, the four concepts from this chapter found to be interesting are Racial and ethnic identity, participation in research, Describing at the appropriate level of specificity, avoiding gender bias. When describing racial and ethnic groups, writers need to be clear as to why they are describing that grouping and the terms of reference. Using gender neutral terms for gender can decrease prejudice and reinforce understanding when used with other words related to race and ethnicity, including sexual orientation, gender role, and sexual preference (Noble et al., 2021).

When writing about research participants, writer must use specific terms such as “college students, children, or respondents who were under 18 years old (Noble et al., 2021). The paper must include descriptive statistics and a discussion of the methods and techniques used to identify and describe the sample. The student sample must be representative of the nation as a whole and the age of each of the participants is the age of the youngest student in the population (Noble et al., 2021).

Gender identity relates to a person’s psychological identity and/or behavioral, emotional, social, physical, and sexual gender. Some use gender identity simply as a way to describe a person’s gender and identify as male or female (Liddell, 2018). A good example of a writer who uses gender identity is a person who feels that they are a woman but that they are biologically female. While a good example of a writer using gender identity is a person who describes themselves as a woman but identifies as a man or an otherwise non-conforming person (Liddell, 2018).

Socioeconomic status (SES) encompasses a wide variety of information, from education and jobs to employment status to health and finances. In this chapter, the three key meanings that need to be followed are race/ethnicity, SES, and the categories and areas of expertise (Liddell, 2018). When talking about SES, writers also need to be clear about the reasons why they are talking about that group. If an author wants to discuss an interest group, they must be clear about their group. They are responsible for making a meaningful effort to make sure that the author’s intent for his discussion is one that does not imply a connection or association between the discussion and the group as a whole (Liddell, 2018).

Chapter 6: Mechanics of Style

From this chapter 6, the most important mechanisms in writing are punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviation. Punctuation fills our writing with sensitive intonation of words in a concise manner that makes sense (Shweba & Mujiyanto, 2017). A long period of quotation marks in the middle of sentences provides a space to pause while a short period of quotation marks can break through the paragraph to make the sentence more intelligible. When creating formal writing, writers need to be especially careful when using the punctuation system from paragraphs with italic text (Shweba & Mujiyanto, 2017).

capitalization on the other hand, can create a clear reading experience for readers with other languages and has the tendency to create visual noise (Shweba & Mujiyanto, 2017). This is more common in written texts to create space in prose to allow language to flow over the word. In any writing setting that incorporates the punctuation system from paragraphs, writers must keep the page clean and neat in order for it to be a readable reading experience (Shweba & Mujiyanto, 2017).

Abbreviation can help increase readability and enhance comprehension by eliminating complexity in the language’s meaning. It is a tool that helps fill in gaps and make meanings understandable. It can also be used to communicate information that can be found within the text to make it more meaningful (Goode et al., 2016).

Numbers and symbols also need attention and may need to be capitalized or capitalized for readers of other languages to be certain the numbers and symbols are being capitalized correctly and have added value to the writing (Goode et al., 2016). Although each one of these issues is well covered, some other issues are to be avoided if writing is to be a reliable source of data. For example, it should be easy to verify a person’s identity if they are identified by the first person pronoun (they/them) of a few words to be precise. (Goode et al., 2016).
