  • In Chapter 9, read the section, “Effective Report Headings and, under that, “Construct a clear hierarchy of heading levels” on page 271 (See attachment please). In Chapter 10, read the section, “What to Review When Editing Formal Business Reports” on page 308 ( See attachment please).
  • Make sure you understanding heading levels by looking at the example in the text on page 306 (See the attachment please).
  • The sample outline I want you to follow is the first sample, THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS, in the sample outlines at Alphanumeric Outlines from The Purdue OWL (Links to an external site.), an excellent general writing resource.
  • Choose a topic that interests you—other than THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS—and
write an alphanumeric outline for a report you would write. Do not write the report, only the outline.
  • Include one example of each of the four following hierarchies: I, II, III; A,B,C; 1,2,3; and a,b,c. That’s it; no more hierarchies are required. So, for example, if you use ABC, 123, and abc under the “I” (first) heading, you will not need to give examples of these again in the II and III sections. Obviously, this is not going to be an exhaustive outline for many reports.
