Week 7 Questions
1) Identify an instance in which a primary claim by claimsmakers was converted into a secondary claim by the media. You can refer back to the example in the Outsider Claimsmakers lecture (lecture 4) in the interview between activist DeRay McKesson and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer or the example in The Role of the Media lecture (lecture 9) in the coverage of Ebola focusing on what researchers/medical practitioners were stating versus how the media was presenting it. What is the primary claim? What is the secondary claim? What motivations does the media have for altering the primary claim?
2) Provide an assessment of policing and protest in America. Review recent or historical acts of protest in America and the response by police officers. Describe 2-3 instances of public protest: 1) what is being protested, 2) who is protesting/describe demographically, 3) where is the protest taking place? Are there any patterns in tactics by protesters, by police officers, by the media covering the events? Use the examples of protests to support your assessment.
