It examines the intersection of race and ethnicity, the carceral system, the impact of climate change, and the how federal, state, and local governments deal with issues.

The first reading, Eugene Clemons May Be Ineligible for the Death Penalty. A Rigid Clinton-Era Law Could Force Him to Be Executed Anyway. Written by Seth Reed Wessler and published in ProPublica, addresses changes that have made to habeas corpus requests and how these changes have impacted prisoners. The story of one such prisoner – Eugene Clemons – is at the center of the story.

The second reading, Dangerous Heat, Unequal Consequences by Sofia Moutinho and Elisabeth Gawthrop and published by the Center for Public Integrity, examines how climate changes are exacerbating inequities in Arizona and Florida. In particular, the authors examine the way that increases in extreme heat are disproportionately impacting communities of color.
