United States is becoming more and more diverse. We are seeing patients with a broad range of perspectives regarding health which are influenced by their social and cultural backgrounds. The health care industries need to be competent in these differences in order to provide adequate care and acquire better outcomes for this growing population.
Patients are all different, they have their own sets of beliefs, values, socioeconomic status, expectations, habits, health practices and many more. Patients need to feel respected and heard. In order to establish patients respect, one needs to be sensitive to what they are saying and what their beliefs are. Communication between patient and health care providers is the key in attaining the necessary information to establish a better understanding of patients as well as incorporating better plans and outcomes. Working together will increase patients satisfaction and increase health. “Poorer health outcomes may result when sociocultural differences between patients and providers are not reconciled” (Betancourt et al. 2016).
Since United States is made up of a wide variety of indiviudals, health care providers are going to be expected to be culturaly competent. In order to achieve greater health outcomes, every patient will have to be treated with repect. Acquiring cultural knowledge will help meet the needs of patients and will help improve overall patients health.
