Data reports can be pulled from an electronic health record (EHR) at the individual patient level or at a higher population level. Population level may be all patients at the clinic or within the institutional system with a certain similar characteristic such as specific diagnosis, age category, BMI index etc. The ability to exchange this information can be beneficial for both the patient and provider. To better track and securely share patients’ medical histories, more and more health care providers are participating in a health information exchange (HIE).
