Unit 3A: Judiciary and Judicial Review

Note: As each class is a double session (the equivalent of two classes), two units will be covered in each class.
• All assigned readings are posted on BB including textbook pages (to give students a few weeks more time to obtain textbook)
• I have included short video clips to watch which also explain the lessons. These are optional but students have found these helpful in explaining and summarizing some of the main points in the readings.
• WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS FOR UNITS 2A AND 2B: Submit your assignments for both Units 2A and 2B together to BB by Saturday 9/12 at 7:30am to BB on Assessments/Assignments. Assignments submitted after that will be marked “late” in the system. Assignments submitted 48 hours after due date and time will not be accepted.
• Written submissions must be in Microsoft Word, 1.5 spacing, 12 font.
Indicate Unit and Question number that you are answering.

(2) In January 2019, Jussie Smollett claimed that he was the victim of a hate crime in Chicago. He was later accused of a hoax. He claimed that he was being denied due process.
Look up the terms “Smollett due process” on the Internet and read about this matter.

In one brief paragraph, indicate whether you think Smollett’s understanding of due process is correct. Is he talking about due process in the legal system or due process of public opinion? Explain whether or not you think he was being denied due process and why.
