Students will read Martin Luther King’s “ I Have A Dream” Speech

and determine whether it is primarily Ethos, Pathos, Logos or a combination of two or three of those. Then, students will write a five paragraph essay (outline example provided below). Essay must include evidence from the speech to support their claims and evidence must be cited in MLA style within the essay. For example (King lines XXX-XXX).

Outline

1. Intro paragraph with thesis statement: Here you will introduce the speech and then tell me what you think the speech primarily is.

2. Body Paragraph 1

3. Body Paragraph 2

4. Body Paragraph 3

What you will discuss in these body paragraphs is going to depend on how many rhetorical devices you choose for the speech. If it is primarily just one Rhetorical Device OR two Rhetorical Devices, then you will break up the three body paragraphs into beginning, middle and end of speech. However, if you determine it is all three Rhetorical Devices, then you will devote a body paragraph for Ethos, one for Pathos and one for Logos.

5. Conclusion Paragraph: Here you will wrap up what you said in your essay and reiterate your thesis using different word choices.
