Before beginning this assignment, review all of the requirements for the Argument / Persuasive Research Paper. The Argument / Persuasive Research Paper is due in Week 7.
Definition of the Assignment
This assignment requires students to form a thesis statement based on the controversial issue topic information researched so far, which will now focus the argument for the Argument/ Persuasive Research Paper. The student should submit the thesis statement for approval by writing a proposal paragraph.
Students will:
- Examine the informational research towards forming an argument/ taking a stand on the issue
- Write a thesis statement which is an assertion to be supported in the paper
- (think “I want my paper to argue that….,” then take off the first part of the sentence through “that” – what remains will be your thesis, or at least close enough that you can reword/ construct the statement)
- You may be able to form your thesis by answering your research question, or by making the question into a statement.
- Note: The thesis is not a statement of fact, is not a question (although it may be formed from your research question), is not in first person (I think….), and is not an announcement of what the paper will do (This paper will discuss….)
- Send the thesis statement in a proposal to the instructor by typing a developed paragraph into the assignment box.
- Include the narrow, focused issue that you are using.
- Include the thesis statement that you want to use in your paper
- Include a brief rationale of why you think the thesis will be supportable
- Request thesis approval from the instructor.
- Proofread/ edit your paragraph
