Directions:
You have learned about the Kingdom Plantae and Kingdom Fungi. You can find them in your
backyard or neighborhood parks, or even in your salad bowl. In class, we have talked about 5
major groups of plants: Bryophytes (liverworts, mosses, hornworts), Lycophytes (club mosses),
Pterophytes (ferns & allies), Gymnosperms (conifers, cycads, gnetophytes, gingko), and
Angiosperms (eudicots & monocots), and 4 major groups of fungi: chytrids, zygote fungi, sac fungi,
and club fungi. Review lecture notes or textbook to know the characteristics of those 9 groups so
you can identify them. For this assignment, you will find organisms from 3 different groups listed
above. For example, a sword fern (a Pterophyte), a flowering Rhododendron (an angiosperm), and
a button mushroom (a club fungi). Once you spend some time looking for them, you will know they
are everywhere.
You can do this homework from home. Just go to your backyard or neighborhood parks or grocery
stores or even just your refrigerator. Organize your responses by using sub–headings properly.
In your report, please tell me the following things:

1. First, generally describe the environment where you observe this plant (or fungus).
Then, give me a bit more details about organism 1 …
2. Describe its look, touch, and smell, as detail as possible.
3. Next, break it apart carefully, if possible, to observe its fine structures. Use a magnifying
glass if you got one. For example, take apart a flower, and describe what you see.
4. Finally, go on–line to find information about the organism. Tell me 3 interesting facts about
the organism. Do remember to cite your information source.
