Write an essay no shorter than three pages that A) summarizes the history of the United States abolitionist movement and B) identifies the role played by abolitionists (if any) in bringing about the end of slavery.
Your summary (in response to prompt A) and your argument (in response to part B) need not be separate. In other words, you may integrate your summary into your argument.
Cite specific historical evidence to support your argument. You will not be able to include all of the material we have discussed; your task is to select and summarize key issues, figures, and events in support of a coherent and persuasive audience.
At a minimum, your essay should address the following points:
- the philosophical and social origins of abolitionism in the US
- social factors that contributed to the spread of abolitionist ideas
- the evolving goals, strategies, organization, and division of the abolitionist movement
- the political, economic, and legal context for national debates regarding slavery
- the relationship between abolitionists and major political parties
- abolitionist views on government policies and legal decisions related to slavery
