First Pat:Address the Opposition’s Concerns(finish this work according to my outline)

It’s easy to “preach to the choir,” to get those people who already agree with you to listen to your arguments. But what about those people who completely disagree with your stand? Your job as a persuasive writer is to convince them; one of the best ways to do this is to address their concerns. Doing this effectively helps you in several ways:

  1. It lets you break down their barriers, so they’ll listen to you.
  2. It helps you establish yourself as being credible on the issue.
  3. It allows you to maintain control over the argument, since you have brought up their concerns before they have.
  4. It alerts you to any potential weaknesses in your argument that you may wish to strengthen.
  • Make sure your readers know which side you’re on: While it’s important to bring up the other side (the opposition), you have to be careful not to confuse your reader about which side you are on as you bring up the opposition. Phrases that can help you do this include “many people think,” “those who oppose,” “the opposition says,” “opponents of _____ say,” etc.

You have two paths you can follow when addressing the concerns of the opposition:

  • Refutation: Sometimes, you’ll simply want to tell the opposition right away why their reasons are flat out wrong. Some words and phrases that can help you do this include “but,” “yet,” and “however.”
  • Concession: Sometimes, you’ll need to concede that the opposition’s argument has some Of course you’ll want to show right away why your argument is still the more persuasive one. Magic words/phrases that can help you bring up the other side’s concern but downplay it are “although,” “though,” and “even though.”

Example: “Although it may be true that Giants’ fans will be able to watch a game in much more comfort at the new baseball stadium than at Candlestick Park, thousands of other San Franciscans are going to be made to suffer through the tremendous amount of traffic the stadium is going to cause in the area.”

Directions: Please upload an electronic version by the due date. Please list a bibliography of two sources that represent the opposition to the position you are taking in your term paper. (Remember, the sources you use in this paper must be from either books, newspapers, magazines or scholarly journals, either in their online or hard-copy formats. )

Second Part: Can painting a mountain restore a glacier?

Read the article below:

“Slowly but surely an extinct glacier in a remote corner of the Peruvian Andes is being returned to its former colour, not by falling snow or regenerated ice sheets, but by whitewash.”
