UCLA Environmental Adaptation Discussion Responses

1.  Respond to this week’s reading, Robin Murray and Joe Heumann “Passage as journey in Sherman Alexie’s Smoke Signals : a narrative of environmental adaptation” with 3-4 sentences addressing this idea of “environmental adaptation”.

Part II.  Please respond to one of the three prompts in Part II.

1.  Research #notyourmascot or @notyourmascot.   What do you think about the hashtag/movement?  Has your school or favorite team ever appropriated an image or symbol, used a racially charged or insensitive mascot?

2.  In Sherman Alexie’s Smoke Signals, the men take a bus trip off the Rez to retrieve Victor’s father’s ashes and truck after his death.  The bus trip is difficult for a couple of reason but they have a hostile encounter when a guy refuses to move from their seat.  What did you make of that scene and how Victor and Thomas reacted?

3.  Smoke Signals often uses humor to comment on stereotypes about Indigenous people.  What do you think Indigenous audiences might have thought about the comedy?  Is this an effective way to handle stereotypes?
