Assignment Instructions/Requirements
General Assignment Description and Requirements
For your final paper, you should have the following sections included: title page, abstract, introduction, literature review, conclusion, and bibliography. You should have at least ten to fifteen academic sources for your final paper, though you can have more.
Possible lengths for each section should be around:
Introduction and Background: 1-2 pages
Literature Review: 7-10 pages
Conclusion: 1-3 pages
Remember: the lengths of each section can vary and these are just general ideas of where they should fall. Remember also that you must be both at least 10 pages AND 3,000 words in your final draft. If your paper is 10 pages, but under 3,000 words, you will need to add. Your title page, abstract, and bibliography do not count toward the total page and word counts.
Consider
1) Feedback on previous assignments (edit based on these!)
2) How you can deal with the ideas more directly than referring to and summarizing the articles.
This is the difference between –
Writing about the article: An article written by Kishonna Gray in 2012 discusses the difficulties experienced by Black women video game players on Xbox Live.
and
Writing about the ideas: Video game spaces can present a variety of hostile interactions for players, though this varies based on gender and race. For example, Black women receive a disproportionate amount of hostile interactions on Xbox Live (Gray, 2012).

Questions to Ask Yourself While Editing…
- Overall:
- Have I edited carefully? (reading aloud to yourself can help!)
- Have I taken previous feedback from my assignments into account?
- Have I used my previous assignments to build my final paper?
- Have I double checked my APA?
- Did I remember that citations in parentheses only cover one sentence?
- Did I remember to keep the year with the citation? For example, “According to Brown (2019)” or (Brown, 2019).
- Have I incorporated course content into my paper (including lectures, external materials, and readings)?
- Do I have headings?
- Am I following the outline provided
Download outline provided and the formatting guidelines?
- Have I edited carefully? (reading aloud to yourself can help!)
- Introduction:
- Have I cited my information?
- Have I included some kind of background? History, statistics, demographics?
- Am I showing the reader why this is important/they should care/they should want to read this paper?
- Have I included a thesis that outlines the major points I will make? (e.g., “Inequality in the United States can be better understood by looking at representations of gender and race and ethnicity in popular culture” where gender and race/ethnicity in popular culture are the “themes” I focus my literature review writing around)
- Literature Review:
- Have I made an effort to synthesize instead of summarizing? (refer back to your transitions/synthesis solutions in Week 9 Navigation, Additional Editing Considerations, An Important Note on Citing and Paraphrasing, and Literature Review Reminder)
- Have I used transitions to assist with flow in my writing?
- Have I focused on the major findings, rather than the process of the articles that I am discussing? (refer back to Additional Editing Considerations)
- Are my articles recent? (they should be, at the oldest, published since 2005 and preferably since 2010)
- Have I made an effort to synthesize instead of summarizing? (refer back to your transitions/synthesis solutions in Week 9 Navigation, Additional Editing Considerations, An Important Note on Citing and Paraphrasing, and Literature Review Reminder)
- Conclusion:
- Have I cited any important additional information?
- Have I reiterated the scope and importance?
- Have I summarized the major takeaways of the literature review (e.g., if I was talking about inequality in the intro, how did the specific things I discussed in the literature review highlight what forms inequality takes in American society?)
- Have I offered potential future changes or directions based on the evidence discussed in my paper?
- References:
- Have I double checked my APA? Even if I used a generator, which can be wrong?
- Are my sources listed in alphabetical order based on the first author? (remember – do not change the order of the authors as listed on the paper. If the authors are Zane, Asthon, and Purdue, keep them in that order and include them toward the end of your list!)
- Do I have the “hanging indent (Links to an external site.)“?
