In “Five Things to Know About Students’ Sense of Belonging: Insights From My Uber Driver’s Daughter,” author Terrell L. Strayhorn shares an anecdote of his encounter with a girl named Victoria, in which they had a conversation about Victoria’s past experiences of visiting colleges. As Strayhorn acknowledges how Victoria behaves in situations when receiving different treatments from others, he analyzes the essence of the sense of belonging which matters to both students and educators. Finally, Strayhorn claims that a sense of belonging is about people being genuine and getting along with others who accept them.

I found Strayhorn’s analysis credible since he puts himself in the readers’ shoes to view Victoria’s story, which brings up readers’ reactions to his viewpoint. For example, when Victoria states she believes she can contribute to racial issues even though she is white, Strayhorn shows total agreement from the perspective of an audience, which allows readers to understand the author’s belief and matches their feelings to it, further agreeing with Strayhorn’s thoughts. In addition, Strayhorn presents ethos to readers by analyzing Victoria’s responses, which concretely interprets how the sense of belonging matters to students. This is revealed when Strayhorn elaborates on his emphasis on the sense of belonging by extracting Victoria’s speech. For instance, Strayhorn mentions that Victoria feels either ignored when left alone and special when being treated well. He utilizes this example to support his previous claim that a sense of belonging is vital. The methods that Strayhorn applies to persuade readers are effective to me since he attracts readers with the story first and explains details later so that readers can assimilate his claims.

Overall, did you find any techniques that Strayhorn presents ethos? What treatment from others do you value the most in order to fit yourself with the sense of belonging?
