For example, when Victoria states she believes she can contribute to racial issues even though she is white, Strayhorn shows total agreement from the perspective of an audience, which allows readers to understand the author’s belief and matches their feelings to it, further agreeing with Strayhorn’s thoughts. In addition, Strayhorn presents ethos to readers by analyzing Victoria’s responses, which concretely interprets how the sense of belonging matters to students. This is revealed when Strayhorn elaborates on his emphasis on the sense of belonging by extracting Victoria’s speech. For instance, Strayhorn mentions that Victoria feels either ignored when left alone and special when being treated well. He utilizes this example to support his previous claim that a sense of belonging is vital.
