Brief Description: The T-Shirt project is a short research essay covering a product of your choosing. The
project will be scored using a 100-point scale. 20% of your class grade will come from this project. This is
a big part of your grade from a very short essay. Make sure you put the necessary time and effort into it!
Requirements:
1. Read The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy. This book is the basis for the entire project.
2. Choose a topic. You will pick one product to be the focus of your research. The vast majority of
products will work, but you can ask me if you are unsure about your choice.
a. Note: You cannot use a t-shirt, a pencil, an iPhone, toaster, or any textiles (any type of
clothing, including shoes).
3. Write a short research essay (900-1,100 words) addressing the “Topics to Cover” listed below.
The essay should be written using MLA format and include proper in-text citations and a works
cited page.
4. Turn in your research paper by Thursday, April 29th at 11:59 pm central time. Please submit
your paper as a Word or PDF document. Topics to Cover: Your essay should address the 5 bolded topics below. Each of these topics is covered in
our course material and in The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy. Accordingly, you should use
these materials as a guide for discussing each of these topics.
1. Explain the globalized production process of the product you chose.
a. Consider the material covered in Ch. 2 – Globalization and The Business Environment.
You should also draw on your reading of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy.
2. Explain the important institutional factors that contribute to the globalized nature of the
product you chose. Recall that institutional factors include cultural, economic, political, and
legal institutions and conditions. Some of these may affect your product more than others.
a. Consider the material covered in Ch. 3 – Culture and Society; Ch. 4 – The Global
Economic Environment; Ch. 5 – The Political Environment: State and Business Actors;
Ch. 6 – The Legal Environment. You should also draw on your reading of The Travels of a

3. Explain how international trade policy affects the production and/or selling of the product.
a. Consider the material covered in Ch. 7 – International Trade and Globalization and Ch. 8
– Global Finance. You should also draw on your reading of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the

4. Explain how innovation and technological progress (or a lack thereof) has impacted the
production and/or consumption of the product.
a. Consider the material covered in Ch. 9 – Technology and Innovation. You should also
draw on your reading of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy.
5. Explain the ethical issues stemming from the production and/or selling of this product.
a. Consider the material covered in Ch. 11 – Ethics and Social Responsibility. You should
also draw on your reading of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy.
