Currently, it is rare that technology is not able to reach every corner of the world. The Allegory of the Cave reminds me of the early 1900’s United States correctional system; before there was internet and when there was only the snail mail system. People who had been incarcerated for decades would get released, after already being acclimated to the conditions of being in prison. Once out in the the real world, however, they would realize that the rest of the world had already moved on. After trying to re-enter society, some former inmates would try to get sent back to prison to regain some sense of their prior normality. Towards the end of the video, the former prisoner who was released came back to the cave to tell the other cavemen what he had seen, but none of them believed him. Prisoners, back in the 1900s and as it is now, are older juveniles and adults. They have already experienced some life. There have been one or two instances where children who were held captive and released in their adulthood have made the news. I can only imagine what it was like for them to see the sun for the first time and later, enter school to learn about history , etc. Once out of captivity, though, what are the chances of that child returning to the situation they were in prior to release?

The Allegory of the Cave does remind me of some things in the modern world. It reminds me greatly of how people interpret things that they read on social media. The people who are chained in the cave are people who read and believe everything they see on social media, the people hiding behind the wall are all the people creating false news and spreading lies. It is only when you actually do your own research or escape from the cave is when you truly understand what is happening in the world. The people who actually escape the shackles and see the world for how it truly is will actually be enlightened. The ones who are enlightened need to try and get the others out of the cave and see the true reality.

The Allegory of the Cave did not instantly spark any comparable situation in the modern world of which I could recall. As I thought on it more, I think it can be compared to religion. Growing up, I was raised into a Baptist family. We went to church every Sunday and before the service I sat in Sunday school. I was taught from a young age that Jesus and God are absolute, and they exist in a physical aspect. This is like being in the cave and knowing the reality that I have been presented as true. As I grew up though, I came out of the cave and had learned a new reality that they are not physical beings that exist on our planet. According to Socrates’ explanation of knowledge, I do not know if God exists, but I have the ability to believe that he does.
