You are to summarize, and interpret the significance of, an argument or result of a study presented in an academic or scholarly publication (ie. academic book, peer-reviewed journal article, or think-tank report).
To do so, you will first need to identify an appropriate study that fits the above criteria, familiarize yourself with the findings or argument, and ultimately summarize that argument in a way that is understandable and compelling for a college-educated reader interested in the subject (but not necessarily for a political science major). Note that this only requires you to read and report on a single study, but most studies will also provide a brief literature review that presents where the research fits within the existing literature and why it is important

For this assignment, you are to analyze either quantitative data, qualitative data, or both, to explore
your research topic or issue. Ultimately, you will write an accessible analysis of the data, briefly
explaining the topic and how the data helps to explain or highlight an element of that topic, or the
degree to which an assertion about the topic is supported or undermined by the data.
Types and Sources of Data
Quantitative Data: Broadly defined, any characteristic of individuals or geo-political units (cities,
states, countries) that can be measured with numbers or placed in categories. This can include public
opinion data, data describing institutions like democracies, election results, campaign finance
expenditures, Census data, economic data etc. The presentation can be as simple as a chart or table
presenting summary statistics, to something more elaborate like a cross-tabulation or comparison of
means to explore relationships.
Qualitative Data: Broadly, this includes evidence that is not readily captured by categories or
numeric values. Examples include newspaper accounts, timelines of events, interviews, policy
documents, website content, etc. Here, the goal is the same as with quantitative data, but the
presentation of the data itself will be in the form of a narrative or discussion that includes quotations or
specific references to portions of the qualitative data. For instance, one might want to discuss specific
aspects of an interview or highlight arguments in an historic document to illuminate the topic or analyze
an argument.
Sources of Data: The expectation is that the analysis you present will be your original work,
using primary data (ie. a data set on public opinion, or evidence from a primary document or historic
account such as newspaper archives) from which you construct a table/chart or the narrative. You
should not use a table/chart or presentation that has already been constructed and presented. Copying
a figure from a report or newspaper, for instance, is not the idea.
That said, finding data is easier than ever. From statistics for countries around the world, to
public opinion and Census data, or online archives of newspapers and interviews with political figures, it
is reasonable to find data that can help in your exploration of your topic. Rather than provide what
would be an incomplete list of all the possible data sources, please ask your instructor for some
guidance for appropriate suggestions.
One suggestion is to apply a finding or insight you come across in the news or academic study
and apply it to a different time period or unit of government (ie. public opinion in the US and see if it
holds in a different country; or election results from a different time period, etc.).
Expectations
The assignment essentially asks you to play the role of a data journalist in that you will be
conducting an analysis with appropriate data and presenting the results in a readable and engaging
format. The format is fairly straightforward. First, briefly discuss your topic and why the type of data
you are presenting would be useful to help understand a particular aspect of that topic. Second, present
and interpret the data (again, in a table/chart or narrative). Finally, a discussion or conclusion of what
your data says about the topic. You might also want to mention the limitations of this analysis. The key
is to ask fairly straightforward questions and utilize appropriate data. This is not a scientific paper, so
keep in mind that there will be caveats to your interpretation.
To give you a sense of what data journalism (and this blog post) might look like, below are a few
examples. Keep in mind that these websites have people devoted to producing high quality charts and
graphs. Yours will likely be more in-line with traditional Excel/Spreadsheet figures or maps that are
created by online data pages. The point is to try to produce something interesting and hone your data
analysis skills. That said, I think these are good examples of data journalism. As with the other
assignments, you are still learning, so do understand that these may be of higher quality than I would expect given your resources.
