As discussed in this weeks’ lecture, much of Black cinema has traditionally only been validated if it enforces certain stereotypes of the Black experience, like the presence of violence and tragedy. How do films of the New Black Cinema era such as Boyz N the Hood and this weeks’ showing, Do the Right Thing, both exemplify these stereotypes and transcend them? How has Black Cinema evolved in the subsequent eras in regards to showcasing a more accurate representation of the Black experience?
2.In the Diawara reading, it mentions how the relationship between Black Independent Cinema and Hollywood cinema, and how it’s a “dichotomy between so-called marked cultures and unmarked cultures…..high art and low art”. How has film culture and distribution contributed to this framing, and how is it still perpetuated today?
