As we heard in the podcast Abraham Davis faced six years of prison for an act of vandalism against the town’s mosque. According to The Times (2017), since 9-11 attacks on Muslim mosques has increased. Reflect on this week’s podcast, and stereotypes of Arab-Americans, then respond to the following questions.
1. What stance did the Mosque take in the vandalism case with Abraham Davis? How is this an example of cultural relativism?
2. Do research on what stereotypes are/have been associated with Arab Americans. The source material may be from scholarly books, movies, TV programs, and/or personal interaction with people of Arab heritage. Give an example of one such stereotype.
3. Finally, explain how and why these stereotypes are detrimental to our interaction with Arab Americans or serve as a communication barrier. Draw upon information on communication barriers from Chapter 8.
