For this assignment, you must first find a movie or other appropriate media that contains a description of a fictional society. There are several science fictions examples such as The Hunger Games, The Handmaid’s Tale, Avatar, Warhammer 40,000, Star Trek and so on. If you can’t think of an example, I have found that the 1984 movie “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome” is particularly useful for this assignment. Watch or read just enough of the media in question for your to have a description of the “world” in which the story is set. In the case of “Thunderdome” the first 45 minutes is exposition explaining the world of the film.
Next consider the fictional society in question and write down what examples of material culture you have seen. Then consider other aspects of culture such as rituals, and norms and use this to consider what the values of the society in question. What do the elements of culture tell you about the values of the fictional society in question? Regarding the values of the fictional society, why do you think a society would choose those particular values over values that we consider important?
